DESCRIPTION
The agencies and code writing bodies listed above provide
research, testing and model code language specific to CKV or
Commercial
Kitchen
Ventilation.
This list may not be all inclusive but identifies the major
bodies most likely involved in various aspects of CKV.
It is the ICC who collects, interprets and prepares national model
codes presented for adoption by states, counties and municipalities.
The International Code Council was formed from three previously
regional groups known as ICBO, BOCA and the SBCCI.
See the map link below for states who currently have adopted
versions of the ICC codes either at the state level or partially
adopted sections by other governing bodies within the state.

ADOPTION PROCEDURES and LAG TIME
The challenge facing all segments of the Commercial
Kitchen
Ventilation
industry and the officials charged with compliance is simply
lag time. Designers who theoretically must follow the latest
versions of the ICC codes often meet with challenges when
local AHJ officials working under their respective code language
are several years behind the latest published version. Local
officials are often at odds with architects and mechanical
engineers due to the fact that the current codes in their
jurisdiction have not been updated for four, five or even
six years or more. These might be state, county or city codes.
While some states have a mechanism in place to adopt national
codes on a statewide basis, other states have no laws for
that purpose. In those cases, adoption is left up to local
governmental bodies who may not understand the impact that
their reluctance to adopt the latest codes causes business
and industry and their own AHJ officials. Local AHJ groups
are urged to contact their public officials to improve the
process. Local AHJ officials acting together for a common
cause can improve not only the CKV segment
but all other building related codes as well. |
