Many technical committees made up of hundreds of highly qualified individuals from professional engineers to manufacturers, code and standard professionals and others representing associations and operators make up the ASHRAE organization. One such committee is tc5.10 Kitchen Ventilation.
This kitchen ventilation committee has been very active for over a decade and has made significant contributions to the improved quality and operation of commercial kitchen ventilation systems. These contributions have included technical improvements, improved code and standard language plus developing a readily understandable handbook for designers and engineers.
Research is the foundation of understanding. ASHRAE accepts requests for funding from technical committee chairs. They then vote on the many projects submitted. Only projects with well documented reason advance to the point of actually being authorized to receive research dollars.
The original submission must first be accepted by a Research Authorization Committee before being submitted for the actual dollars to be approved. Even then, ASHRAE has to determine how to distribute the limited funds they have available for research.
The tc5.10 Kitchen Ventilation Committee currently has three projects on their priority short list of projects requiring funding.
- Evaluating Field Test Method of CKV Performance
- Thermal Comfort in Commercial Kitchens
- Minimum Acceptable Dilution of Commercial Kitchen Exhaust
The tc also has developed a long term research plan consisting of the following projects.
- Make-Up Air Impacts on Hood Performance and IEQ
- Analysis of Island Hoods
- Thermal Plume Development and CFD Simulation of Hood Performance
- Dishwasher CFM Requirements
- Method of Test to Determine When a Type I Hood is Required
- Enhanced Kitchen Load Calculation Manual
In addition seminar topics are being developed to address the following issues:
- Analysis of Short Cycle Hoods
- Variable Flow and Savings Potential
