CODES
ICC and IAPMO HAVE ANNOUNCED JOINT DISCUSSIONS!
In a news release dated August 23, 2005, the International Code Council (ICC) announced that they are involved in formal discussions with IAPMO, the International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials. The intent is to pursue a single set of plumbing and mechanical codes. UP YOUR STACK™ applauds this move by both parties to consolidate the two sets of codes. To view the full news release, Click here for a link.

FIRE & SAFETY PLAYING WITH FIRE is the title of Beth Lorenzini’s informative article.
Beth Lorenzini writes about the dangers of using outdated dry chemical fire protection systems in the August issue of Foodservice Equipment Reports Magazine. She stresses the need to conform to UL300 in order to purchase insurance and states “Granddad’s already gone”. Local fire inspectors and insurance representatives should be especially alert when visiting older installations. Click here for a link and go to page 25.

CODES Join us at the Detroit ICC Conference on 9/27/05.
UP YOUR STACK™ is presenting a two hour program at the ICC Education Program on Tuesday, September 27, 2005. The program is titled “IT’S JUST A BOX, ISN’T IT?” The program addresses code and plan check professionals and what they should know about CKV or commercial kitchen ventilation. Our presenters include Jay Parikh, P.E. who will address codes and standards specific to CKV, Rich Swierczyna, P.E. who will demonstrate capture and containment testing and Don Fisher, P.E. who will discuss the real world challenges that CKV operations face plus the fundamentals of design. CEU credit applies.

NEW - BFCA offers Commercial Kitchen Exhaust Special Topic Series
BFCA, the Building & Fire Code Academy located in Hoffman Estates, IL in partnership with Compliance Solutions International has announced a new two day special topic class. The class is aimed at anyone involved in CKV or commercial kitchen ventilation systems. See the UP YOUR STACK™.com/Education website for dates and locations in Georgia, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Illinois beginning in November, 2005. Click here.

ASHRAE - Testing and Balancing a New Restaurant Exhaust System
The current ASHRAE JOURNAL includes an article written by Steve Melink. It was first published in June of 2003 and was repeated again in the current electronic newsletter. UP YOUR STACK™ has prepared a short version for our readers. Click here for our short version. The full article is available to ASHRAE members by free download. Non-members can purchase it in the ASHRAE Journal section of the ashrae.org bookstore.

DESIGN TIPS - Require Exhaust System T&B be performed by an independent firm.
For reasons of accountability, UP YOUR STACK™ and respected engineers like John Clark, P.E., Don Fisher, P.E. and Steve Melink, P.E. strongly urge specification writers to include independent third party test and balance for buildings, especially those with commercial kitchens. Isn’t it better to insure that the T&B is done under the correct conditions and at the right time, instead of leaving an owner with a poorly performing system for the life of his operation? Energy savings is another long term benefit from a proper T&B. Click Here for our current article and fuller explanation.
