CODES – M60 Hood Interlock Language Upheld at ICC Conference
Lack of industry support was evident at the ICC Conference hearings late last month and the M60-04/05 rule to the IMC or International Mechanical Code was adopted. While numerous organizations wrote strong and compelling challenges, many of those did not attend the actual hearings. Only five voices were raised to support a call to defeat or overturn the M60 language for hood interlocks on all cooking equipment. Click here for the full story.

FIRE & SAFETY NFPA 96 Seeking Comments on TIA Log No. 825
NFPA 96 in its Volume 9, Number 10 issue of NFPA NEWS is seeking comments from interested industry individuals regarding TIA Log No. 825. Comments are due December 7, 2005. This proposal calls for recognition of appliances tested by third party testing laboratories. At the heart of this request is language that clarifies a recent email from NFPA which has resulted in approvals being withheld by some local authorities. Click here for full story.

FIRE & SAFETY – J.T.Somer resigns as Illinois State Fire Marshall
In a surprise announcement, J.T. Somer, Illinois State Fire Marshall resigned stating personal reasons. Gov. Rod Blagojevich accepted his resignation on Friday, October 7, 2005. Somer’s Chief of Staff, Dave DeFraties was appointed Acting Director until a replacement is named.

GRANDFATHERING – When is “Old”, Too Old?
UP YOUR STACK™
was recently invited by Facilitec-USA to observe how a typical kitchen exhaust system cleaning is performed. In this instance we visited a suburban high school in the Chicago area that was built in the early 1950’s. During our visit, we found the school to be well cared for. However, when we began to look at the existing kitchen ventilation system, we began to ask ourselves questions about how long certain operational equipment should be “grandfathered”?
