UP YOUR STACK® suggests that “Tools for the Tool Box” as presented by Rich Swierczyna of the Architectural Energy Lab is something that designers should print out and keep in mind when designing new kitchens. This information was presented during our recent presentation at the ICC Annual Conference Education Program last month in Detroit.

TOOLS FOR THE TOOLBOX:
- Bigger hoods
- Push back equipment (maximize overhang, minimize rear gap)
- A rear seal can improve hood performance
- Minimize mounting height (or use proximity style where practical)
- Side panels, end panels, or end walls
- Heavy duty (broiler) in the middle
- Light duty (ovens) on the end
- Don’t waste hood space over non-cooking
- Introduce makeup air at low velocity
- No 4-way diffusers near a hood
